This simple matcha banana smoothie has become one of my favorite ways to start the day. As my fascination with matcha and its health benefits edges closer to a full-blown obsession, I have been finding easy, satisfying ways to work it into my mornings. This one is creamy, lightly sweet, and gives a steady, feel-good boost without feeling heavy.

What makes this smoothie stand out is the texture. Instead of blending everything together, the yogurt is swirled in at the end, creating soft ribbons throughout the glass. It is a small extra step, but it makes the smoothie feel more intentional and enjoyable.

 Ingredients

Ingredients for a matcha banana smoothie including bananas, kale, matcha powder, oats, pecans, plant milk, yogurt, and ice.
  • ¾ cup non-dairy milk of choice
  • ¼ cup plain vegan yogurt
  • 1 handful fresh kale
  • 3 tablespoons rolled oats
  • 2 tablespoons toasted pecans
  • 1 teaspoon matcha powder
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large frozen banana
  • 1 scoop vegan vanilla protein powder, optional
  • Ice as needed

How to Make a Matcha Banana Smoothie

Start by blending the non-dairy milk, kale, frozen banana, matcha, oats, pecans, vanilla, and protein powder if using until completely smooth and creamy.

In a separate container, stir or lightly blend the yogurt with a small splash of non-dairy milk until smooth but still thick.

Pour most of the green smoothie into a glass, add the yogurt mixture, and gently swirl with a spoon or straw. Top with the remaining smoothie and stop before everything fully blends together. The goal is soft ribbons rather than a uniform green.

Why Matcha Works Well in the Morning

Matcha contains caffeine paired with L-theanine, an amino acid that can promote a calmer, more focused energy compared to coffee. Research shared by Harvard Health notes that this combination may help support alertness without the sharp spikes or crashes often associated with caffeine alone.

Paired with carbohydrates and protein, matcha tends to feel smoother and more sustained, which is why it works so well in a morning smoothie like this.

Glass + Straw Set

This is one of my go-to glasses for smoothies like this, paired with a glass straw. I love the shape for thicker blends, and it feels comfortable and sturdy in your hand. I linked for anyone who wants the same setup.

Tips

If this smoothie is your main breakfast, adding protein helps it feel more satisfying and balanced. If you want something lighter, you can skip it and still enjoy the flavor and texture.

This smoothie is best enjoyed right away while cold and creamy, especially if you want to preserve the swirl.
