The Science Behind Distance Energy Healing: What You Need to Know
I wasn’t looking for healing that night. I was having one of those days where everything felt off. I didn’t want to deal with the discomfort, so I did what a lot of us do. I picked up my phone and started scrolling. Not to find an answer, just to get away from feeling.
And then she showed up.
Her name is Bri, but on TikTok she goes by Tip of the Moon. Something about her energy stopped my scroll. My body started to relax. Before she even said she was focusing on the heart chakra, I felt it. I felt warmth and peace move through me and it was just what I needed.
As a Reiki Master, I’ve experienced energy healing often, but this was different. This time I wasn’t the channel, I was the receiver. It reminded me just how powerful distance Reiki really is when it comes from a place of deep intention and surrender.
That moment stuck with me, and it’s part of why I’m sharing this with you now. If you’ve ever wondered about distance Reiki, what it is, how it works, and whether it’s something you can feel, this is for you.
You don’t need a background in energy work to understand it. You just need curiosity and an open mind.
What Is Energy Healing?

At the core of energy healing is the understanding that we are more than just skin and bone. We are energy. Our bodies carry patterns, memories, emotions, and frequencies that move through us all the time. Sometimes that energy flows smoothly. Other times it gets stuck. And when it gets stuck, it can show up as stress, fatigue, tension, or pain. Not just physical pain but emotional weight too. The kind you can’t quite name but feel every day.
Energy healing is about clearing those blocks. It’s about creating space so your system can come back into balance. There are many paths to that balance. Reiki, acupuncture, breathwork, sound healing, and chakra alignment are all part of that larger tradition. Each one taps into your body’s natural wisdom to help you come back to yourself.
How Does Distance Healing Work?
Distance healing, also called remote healing, happens when the practitioner and the recipient are not in the same physical space. You do not need to be in the same room, city, or even country for it to work. It is similar to saying a prayer for someone. You may not be near them, but your intention and energy are still directed toward their well-being. In Reiki, that intention works like a signal. The practitioner tunes into the recipient’s energy using visualization, breath, and Reiki symbols, and channels healing energy through focused attention and practice.
This might sound impossible at first, but it’s supported by something science has been exploring for decades. Quantum entanglement is a principle in quantum physics that shows how two particles, even when separated by great distances, can still affect each other instantly. There is no delay. No physical cord between them. Just pure energetic connection.
In energy work, this connection isn’t just theoretical. It’s felt. When I send Reiki energy during a distance session, I am tuning into your energetic field using intention, visualization, and intuition. I don’t need to know your every thought or emotion. I just need to meet you where you are and offer what wants to move through.
Let me share what that looks like in my own Reiki flow.
- I cleanse my space. Before every session, I clear my energy and the physical space around me. Most often I use smudge spray or Palo Santo to shift the atmosphere and make room for what’s about to come through.
- I sit in stillness. With eyes closed, I enter a meditative state until I feel connected to source energy. It’s a subtle moment when something clicks inside, like tuning a string until it resonates just right.
- I say a prayer. Some call it divine. Some say universe. Some call it God or creator. I speak directly to the creator of the universe and ask that Reiki flow for the highest good of the person receiving it. I ask that it harm none, support all, and move only with clear intention.
- I draw the Reiki symbols. These symbols help anchor and direct the energy. They are sacred, and I draw them with care, allowing their vibration to guide the session.
- I call in spiritual support. I invite my guides to stand with me. Sometimes I call on my ancestors — the ones who love me and have good intentions for all involved. Depending on the session, I may also call in an archangel, especially if the person I’m working with needs extra energetic protection or support.
- I choose supporting tools. Depending on the person and their energy, I may place crystals around me or on the photo or name of the person receiving the healing. One of the stones I often use is selenite, known for its cleansing and gentle frequency.

Why Intention Matters More Than Location
Distance Reiki begins with intention. Not just a casual thought but a focused, clear, heart-led intention to support your healing. That intention is what guides the energy. Without it, the energy has no direction.
When I hold space for a client, whether across the world or across the city, I begin by tuning in. I ask what they are carrying. I ask what they are ready to release. I focus on what their body is calling for, and then I begin. The energy meets them where they are. It does not need GPS. It responds to attention, permission, and connection.
What the Science Says
While energy healing isn’t always something that fits neatly into a lab setting, there is growing research on Reiki and its benefits. A study from Yale University in 2019 found that Reiki helped improve heart rate variability and reduced anxiety in patients recovering from heart surgery. Another peer-reviewed article published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine in 2017 showed that Reiki can support relaxation, reduce pain, and improve overall well-being.
This research is still in its early stages, and not every study is conclusive. But if you’ve ever felt calm in the presence of someone grounded, or suddenly emotional when someone speaks truth to your spirit, you already understand how energy works. Science is catching up to what many healers have known for centuries.
What Distance Reiki Can and Cannot Do
Reiki is powerful, but it’s not a replacement for medical care. It will not cure a disease or take the place of a doctor. But what it can do is help your system soften. It can support your body’s natural healing response. It can help you rest more deeply, release what is stuck, and reconnect with yourself in ways that feel nourishing and real.
I’ve seen clients feel lighter after one session. I’ve watched tears come that needed to come. I’ve had people message me days later saying something shifted, even if they can’t name what it was. It’s been such a wild ride that I’m grateful to be a part of.
What a Distance Session Might Include
Every practitioner has their own way of holding space, but here’s what a session with me might involve.
We begin with intention. You share what you’re moving through, what you’re hoping to feel, or what’s been weighing on you. I tune into your energy using breath and visualization. I may focus on your chakras, on specific areas of the body, or simply allow the energy to flow where it needs to.
Sometimes I use crystals, sometimes sound, sometimes silence. I may send you a follow-up note with what came through, or offer a meditation or journal prompt to help you integrate. It’s not about giving you answers. It’s about giving your energy a chance to return to balance.
